When kids rely too heavily on calculators, they loose a feel for number sense and are not able to think through more complex calculations.

To Professor DeTurck:

1) My autistic daughter LOVES Roman numerals and begs to differ. How else can you read the credits on old movies?

2) If she can learn fractions, almost anyone can learn fractions!

3) Can you say round-off error? If you use too many decimals in repeated calculations like division between very big and very small numbers, round-off errors add up very quickly.

4) Calculus first, then fractions? Again, I am appalled!walkinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05046468024103932112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35650510.post-36807530165508710172008-01-30T19:53:00.000-05:002008-01-30T19:53:00.000-05:00http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/mathscience/2...http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/mathscience/2008-01-23-fractions_N.htm?se=yahoorefer

did ya see this? I think the process of scaffolding is important, especially taking the known to teach the unknown.walkinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05046468024103932112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35650510.post-23435939761799243992008-01-24T15:53:00.001-05:002008-01-24T15:53:00.001-05:00You couldn't have posted this at a better time, Ta...You couldn't have posted this at a better time, Tammy! Austin will be moving into MUS Epsilon soon, which is fractions. I have found it very important to tie in the new learning to what he already knows! You've just saved me the time of having to figure out how to do that for myself! ;)

JenNiffercoohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05064721506550680304noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35650510.post-14664057373713647902008-01-24T15:53:00.000-05:002008-01-24T15:53:00.000-05:00You are an incredible teacher!!!!!You are an incredible teacher!!!!!Prince Andrew and the Queen Mumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08876789726311010657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35650510.post-44809920462196928662008-01-24T10:10:00.000-05:002008-01-24T10:10:00.000-05:00So so wonderful.
